WHO Raises Concern Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Medications

Fewer than a tenth of people eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major barriers to universal availability to the injections that can help people shift considerable weight, explains the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Despite the present best projected outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The recommendation urges governments and firms to expand access, via approaches such as licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Work

The injections imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and increase the sense of being full so individuals reduce food intake.

Patients typically see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence suggests patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the treatment, because their normal appetite come back.

To be carrying excess weight raises your risk for contracting diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and specific malignancies.

Excess weight impacts people in every country and was associated with 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
