This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
