The Whites Hold The Reds at Bay to Earn Valuable Point at Anfield
A pair of unbeaten records remained in place at Anfield, but solely one team could take genuine contentment from the result. Leeds United carried out a textbook strategy of frustrating and containing the hosts, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the lingering limitations behind the current champions' latest upturn.
Defensive Masterclass Earns Vital Point
A drab goalless draw, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely due to the immense dominance of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the Anfield side's inability to unlock a well-drilled Leeds defence. The Merseysiders were reduced to speculative opportunities, and a sprinkling of discontent echoed around the famous ground at the final signal on a sluggish display.
"If I don't utilise the whole squad and we have a schedule like this, I would not do this," the manager stated. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all know his past couple of years was difficult. He is in incredible form but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the mind needs to win over the emotion."
Liverpool's Frustration in Front of Goal
Liverpool at first displayed more energy and precision than in previous matches, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the right side. However, golden opportunities were scarce. The home side's primary moments in the opening period fell to forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a neat one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international drifted infield and drew a save from keeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The Leeds' goalkeeper could not hold the effort, needing a timely intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the rebound.
- Ekitiké later sprinted clear onto a ball over the top but was held by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his appeals for a penalty were dismissed.
Spurned Opportunities Are Costly
Ekitiké's afternoon was compounded when he failed to hit the net with his clearest opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the attacker miscued a header that hit the goalkeeper while facing an unguarded net.
For Leeds, their clearest opportunity came from an Alisson error. The Brazilian shot-stopper sent a wayward clearance straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time shot back towards goal was gathered by the alert Alisson.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest deteriorated into a scrappy affair, low on quality. The midfielder, returning from a ban, tested Perri from distance. The subsequent rebound led to Ampadu controlling the ball, giving Liverpool a free-kick in a promising area, which Wirtz wasted into the wall.
Slot made a three substitution to bring impetus, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his side in ahead from a corner, his effort bouncing just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring streak for the visitors in the closing minutes, but his tap-in was ruled out for a marginal offside call. Ultimately, the two sides had to accept a share of the spoils.
