The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
