The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
