Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
