JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution Seeks to Address the Anime's Biggest Issue

JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution isn't exactly an original film. Instead, the latest cinematic release from the Jujutsu Kaisen supernatural series acts as a recap of the anime's second season combined with the opening installments of its third season, which kicks off the Culling Games storyline from the source material. This establishes Execution, which just got a fresh preview, the first way to view the beginning of the upcoming season ahead of its premiere in early 2026. The film debuts in Japanese theaters on November 7, and in the United States and Canada on December 5.

The Culling Games Storyline

In the Culling Game arc, Top-tier jujutsu user Yuta Okkotsu is introduced in the show and is tasked by jujutsu higher-ups to eliminate his peer Yuji Itadori. Their highly anticipated battle takes place for the first time on the big screen, and if the animation team at the studio have a treat as the two-part Thunderclap episodes waiting in the wings for viewers this end-of-year period, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may turn out to be the present that we've been waiting for.

The "Thunderclap" Controversy

"Thunderclap episodes" from the second season is widely regarded as among the best moments in animated series lore, despite the significant debate in 2023 when the installments originally aired. It was claimed that the artists were suffering from harsh deadlines to the extent, and the released version that was shown at the time was unfinished and allegedly not what the animators initially intended.

The Intense Confrontation

The sequence features a much-hyped confrontation between two powerful sorcerers, Sukuna and Mahoraga. It boasts unique visual techniques, excellent direction, and dynamic fight choreography. A subsequent Blu-ray release allowed the team to include extra footage to enhance the conflict. So it was plausible Execution could enhance the fight further. However, viewing the recent teaser, it's unclear if that fight has undergone further polishing. It'd be a letdown if it was not, because a sequence that grand has to be seen on the biggest screen with the optimal viewing experience.

Season Two's Achievement

The second installment of JuJutsu Kaisen propelled the series to become 2024's anime of the year, and when episodes 40 and 41 were aired consecutively, it was the focus of attention for weeks in the anime community. Viewers knew about the issues behind the scenes, which made them value what they witnessed even more. People eagerly awaited to see if the Blu-ray, released on March 18, would feature extra content to the fight or to see if it was improved in any way, and were overjoyed to see just that, alongside tone adjustments, enhanced animation, and altered color palette.

The Feature's Advantage

But the Blu-ray can only improve what has previously shown in the original airing, whereas the film has the opportunity to fully realize the scene with further changes and freshly created footage.

A Masterpiece

As it stands, these episodes serve as the pinnacle of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be given special attention by Mappa, particularly given the controversy they encountered at the time. It's garnered the attention of viewers all over the globe, and the Culling Games storyline is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of the coming year. If the production company wants to start the year off right, showcase the series' best moment once again in theaters with the best interpretation we've experienced so far.
