Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
