The first preview for the upcoming real-life version of Moana has been released. Is it surprising that, similar to most of Disney's live-action remakes, it appears a lot like an animated film and much less like a genuine film with real actors?
Breathtaking Imagery That Keep an Cartoonish Look
The trailer for the latest version of Moana is undeniably spectacular. It includes sweeping scenery, beautiful soundtrack, and familiar personalities. However, it still looks similar to an animated film. The exaggerated visuals show figures soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into both a bug and a bird. Each of these effects is accomplished through computer-generated imagery and CGI. Similar to previous Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of CGI is so high that it raises the question: what makes these movies “real-life” besides the promotional label?
Story and Music Fans Know and Love
Regardless, this latest Moana seems to be a retelling of the first tale, complete with new renditions of the beloved musical numbers. According to an official synopsis, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
New Performers and Familiar Faces
At the same time, the trailer features a sample of the updated version on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is taking over the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the character in the original movies.
A key figure who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be playing Maui. Naturally, that role already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version seems logical.
Fan Favorite Mascot Shows Up
Arguably the highlight part of the trailer comes in the last scene. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei shows up, screaming at the camera. How else to introduce the film’s true mascot?
Arrival in Theaters
The live-action take of Moana debuts in theaters on July 10, 2026.
