Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal series showcasing causes the company was barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
The founder indicated that he will create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
